iMac G5 PPC DVD Editing Software

Feb 18, 2010 9:13AM PST

My computer is an iMac G5 17? PPC 1.8 GHz OS 10.4.11

This subject, I'm sure, has been covered umpteen times!

I just recorded a TV show with my new Toshiba DVD Recorder/Player. Records and plays well.
I would like to remove the commercials that I recorded. Next time I?ll stop recording while the commercial plays on the TV. I am a newbie at this.

Is there a software or a series of sofwares that I could use to remove the commercials as well as other scenes that I find superfluous? After editing the DVD recording, I could then record the edited version using my Toast or Popcorn softwares. Ideally the software should show a timeline so as to be able to easily tailor the editing.

I have EXTENSIVELY googled the subject to no avail. Lots of suggestions but none that does what I want. There seems to be tons of suggestions to do this on a PC.

The related softwares that I have are as follows:

- iMovie 6.0.4. I cannot install a later revision.
- Mac The Ripper revision 2.6.6
- MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b
- Handbrake 0.7.1
- DVDxDVPro.v2.01t
- Popcorn 3.0.4
- Toast 7 Titanium

Would upgrading to OS 10.5.8 make it more possible to do what I want on my computer?

Your biggest problem is

that the recorder has recorded the show and it is now on a DVD in DVD format and, without converting it to something else, is not editable.

A program called Visual Hub should be able to convert the DVD into DV format and then you can edit using iMovie.

Off subject but...

I have an iMac G5 PPC, i.e same spec as yours. I've bought three different sets of disks to upgrade to OS X 10.4. (I know, I'm behind the times). None of them have worked though. Did you have to do anything special to yours (e.g particular firmware update) in order to be able to install 10.4. I'm just about ready to tear my hair out.

Thanks!

Where did you buy the disks from?

were they Grey in color or where they Black.

The Restore disks are Grey and are generally configured to work only on the machine for which they were issued.

There is no special requirements to go from 10.3 to 10.4

Since you have a DVD already, you simply need software to extract the Video_TS folder files and convert them into a file format that the software you already have (iMovie) will recognize and be able to edit. Download MPEG Streamclip (Free) or HandBrake (Free). These will convert the DVD files to DV which iMovie can edit. I find MPEG Streamclip to be faster. Once you eliminate the commercial breaks, quit iMovie, open the iMovie project file to see it's content, open the Share Movie folder and find the Quicktime reference movie within the iMovie project and drag it into Toast. Toast will quickly burn a DVD from that QT movie. Simple as toast (no pun intended).
