Question

iMac

A few minutes after startup from shutdown or from sleep mode my screen suddenly dims slightly. it also runs much slower then it has in the past.
The computer is 9 years old and running High Sierra 10.13.14

Although your 2009 iMac is capable of running High Sierra,

it is not a good experience.
That year really does not have the legs to carry off HS and you would be better off dropping down to Sierra, if possible.
