Question

Im thinking about getting a new cpu...

Mar 14, 2017 10:07AM PDT

Hi guys,
I'm currently thinking about getting a new CPU and i was looking at the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 65 W 8/16 Core 3.7 GHz 4 MB CPU - Black or https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-yd1700bbaebox-Ryzen-16-Core-3-7-GHz/dp/B06WP5YCX6
Im currently not sure whether this will be a good purchase or not. i currently have a ****** FX-4300 Quad core and a GTX 1060 6gb.
I also obviously have a AMD motherboard.
Basically, i'm just looking to upgrade my CPU to a reasonable standard without having to spend loads on replacing the motherboard AND the CPU rather than just the CPU.
So can anyone help me out by telling me if the Ryzen 7 is a good buy or recommend any good AMD or Intel CPUs ! I have a budget upto maybe £400-450.
Thanks

Heres my speccy

That tells me you have a single stick of RAM?

Speccy could be wrong but on a single stick your PC is dragging anchor.

Before you change CPUs, get what you have into dual channel mode (memory system.)

Nice choice on the SSD. You skipped the 120GB model.

you recommend i get another 8gb stick?
and yeah thought i might aswell get that ssd

It will help the CPU area

The rest of the hardware is pretty nice (SSD, 1060) but if a single stick. Well.....

There are debates over how much it adds in performance so you can enter into debates.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMCvvtaZ5Z0 shows the usual 10 or more percent improvement.

So. Now to to CPU change. Let's get some userbenchmark link in here.

BUT FIRST, check your motherboard CPU compat list (you do this!) and watch out for any caveat about BIOS version or speed required of the RAM. My view on BIOS is always the latest release but no BETAs.

OK. The comparison http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-1700-vs-AMD-FX-4300/3917vs2879

Hmm, my takeaway would be to shop the FX 6300 noted. It looks like the cheap upgrade.

would a 6350 be better than the 6300 in this situation

would a 6350 be better than the 6300 in this situation with 2 8gb ram sticks as i have a decent budget and the better the cpu the better as the money isnt really a problem

ps. would the 1700 work with my rig with two 8gb ram sticks? as you get cooler with it etc

You have to check

You have to check the motherboard CPU support list.

As to the 6350, about a 2% gain it seems.

If you want to explore more CPUs hit http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/ and click off the AMD only option and then the 1700 is indeed in the top 10. But I worry about your motherboard and that CPU.

Did you check that out? I don't see it on the list.
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/760GM-P23_(FX).html

The 8300 and 8350 are on the list there.

If you go for the ryzen you will need to change the mobo.

If you stay with the mobo you have then about the best your going to do is the fx 6300.
The fx 6350 won't work.

Ram...if you stay with 8GB then you will want ddr3 2x4GB @ 1333.
For gaming 2x8GB would be a better fit.
