Fist up! If it is that bad and you suspect "The Cable Guy" did something which caused the problem how about inviting him back to fix the fault.
Secondly, if you are looking for help in the forum it always helps to supply the details of your PC set up and the system you are running.
For instance:-
Win XP IE6 or ME/2000/98
Make of PC
CPU (Intel 2.3GHz)
Memory
Cache
H/Drive (40GB etc)

What good is cable internet without a browser? Assuming the Cable guy really did it (not some Trojan corrupting your system) I be on to a Manager @cable co., not be paying net portion of my bill (service not usably received)and demand they get it working or give me back exactly what I had before accepting their promotional offer? Or did they sell you to AOL?
Have you looked in your Control Panel>add/delete programs? Is your IE6. 5.5 or ? shown. If so, as part of delete program, there is a " Repair IE" option offered. Try that. If not, and you can get on net(a friends comp w/cd burner), you could try "Evolt.Org" they have various browsers for free download. Be warned these are big programs and take perhaps 12 hours to download. You could also go to Mozilla.Org. and dwnld the New Mozilla 1.7.1. exe. Safer to use than IE. Perhaps use that first to get on net then dwnld IE to restore access to MS update.
I would start with Cable Co./ or a very knowledgable friend. Good luck! Happy
