iJailbreak: What's the deal?

Oct 15, 2007 10:10AM PDT

Recently, some 13 year old used Apple Script to design a hacking app for the iPod Touch. Like apps that have been used on the iPhone, this app allows you to install third-party apps onto it. While I could enjoy having an actual version of Mail and Notes/Stickies (or whatever you want to call it) I'm not really seeing the point of it. I don't see the idea of a bricked Touch as enticing. I've been a big Apple user and all, but I haven't gone the extra mile to hack all of my gadgets for better performance. I see this more for the pleasure of hacking than actual use.

Tell me if I'm wrong here, but this app has warning from the creators that it may brick your Touch and they are not responsible for it. There was also something saying that it's possible to restore it to the non-hacked version of the 1.1.1 update after using iJailbreak.

But I don't see the point. Apple's probably going to offer non-existent apps through updates or the iTMS that won't screw the thing, so why not wait for it? Is it really worth it to install this stuff even if it won't damage it "too bad" or it can be removed without problems? If someone has tried this or knows about it, explain the purpose of this thing.

yes

you are wrong because it is almost impossible to brick your ipod. if you are stupid enough to hack your ipod then update it with the latest apple firmware with out restoring then you deserve a bricked ipod.
Yes apple is comming out with 3rd party apps for the touch and iphone but not until feb. so for now this is going to hold people over until apple begins selling them through itms

Did you read stuff that that AriX guy said? If the hack

screws the iPod, it could possibly brick it or so. I also know that you can restore it, but I was just kind of asking what was the point? You're right about the third-party apps though. I read Steve's letter and though four months is long, I can wait for a while.

I wonder if it would be wise to install it now, run all the good stuff on it, then restore it before each software update, etc. Thing is, I don't really need to play games on it or mess with it. I prefer to use the iPod part and Safari. Mail and Notes are nice, but those apps for the Touch were hacked...

I don't think anyone who knows what they're doing would be stupid enough to brick it. I wouldn't. I hope that Apple just gets their own people to make the apps that they already have for the Touch and just sell them. It's not hard; the Touch and iPhone are running the exact same OS, minus the phone related stuff on the Touch.

... Who else has an opinion on this?

i agree

i completely agree with you. i just hacked mine so right now i can enjoy the basics. i have weather notes mail stocks and maps. i don't know if im going to put anything else one there. i also do plan on restoring my ipod when apple releases their apps. i have no problem paying 5-10$ for an app that is EASY to put on and i know will work. so for the time being i will be using my jailbroken ipod, but when feb. comes around off that goes and on goes apple's stuff!

I download iJailbreak but today, when I turned on my laptop,

it was freezing and running very slow. Mail was not working, Safari was too slow, and the Dashboard would not show activity either. I deleted the iJailbreak folder and related and now it runs normal. I have an Intel machine, so this is odd.

I haven't jailbroken my Touch though. I really don't see why I ought to, because if I make one mistake, it's screwed and a bunch of money down the drain. But you never know. I'll probably redownload later.

so they ijailbreak program you think made your laptop run slower or your ipod?

My laptop wasn't running right, so I though iJailbreak did i

Nothing would run correctly. Apparently it added some extra files into my HD... anyway, I trashed the thing and everything is working pretty good now. I'm gping to wait for apps through the iTMS. This is too much to mess with for me right now. Mail and Notes aren't enough to convince me to hack my iPod. Perhaps I will if some mind-blowing app gets created for it LOL.
Nevermind.

Impossible...
Oct 20, 2007 10:56AM PDT

This is literally impossible considering iJailBreak only... runs when it's opened... And it's only an AppleScript too.

Well... I'm just saying what happened.
Oct 20, 2007 12:01PM PDT

Downloaded it, turned on my MBP the next day, and a new file was directly on the HD and nothing was running properly. The Apple in the Finder displayed everything wrong and it was unreadable, Safari would not load pages, Mail would not load my emails, etc. Since it was the most recent download I had, I took it off and everythng immediately started working better.

I've redownloaded it but I'm really not sure if I should actually use it on my Touch. I'm just wary of any possible bricking. I really want it to run right without problems and I'm not interested in screwing it up like I said before. I've redownloaded it and I'm going to try it some time soon, but I'm hoping I can restore it to take it off when necessary like you said on other sites.

So far, everything is running now... but I get a file named "opt" in my HD after I install the program. Is it supposed to do that AriX? Basically, I need to know what's normal for iJailbreak, if you can restore the Touch to before it was jailbroken, and any issues with it.
Thanks for the info and for creating such a nice hack. Kudos to you, since I would never mess around with AppleScript for so long, LOL. Happy

Hmm...

Yes, opt is supposed to be there. If you want, you can remove it. And I'll say it again... That's simply... Not possible Silly

If your touch does get messed up in any way, you can easily restore it.

Okay, thanks. I have yet to try it, and I'll say that

I'm still cautious. But that's just me. I can easily hop on Wi-Fi and access my online email, which tends to work better for me anyway than email apps, or use the web apps from Apple's site. Again, there are some cool stuff out there that have been hacked for it, so I don't know.
Thanks again,

arix i really found that strange as well that his computer would get messed up because of ijailbreak... i just can't see how that would have anything to do with the preformance of one's computer

anyways..love ijailbreak and swear by it!!!! i would recommend it to any one with a mac!
