If the door is open......

If the Sasser worm was able to infect unpatched machines through an open door in the computers protection, can this same door not be used to send out and install the removal tool?

I understand that the Microsoft patch can not be installed through this route, but by removing the worm from the infected machines, this may give the user time to download and install the patch and may slow the frighteningly quick propogation of this annoying little pest.
