If Macs are now "PC" inside, can we buy better video cards?

Dec 2, 2006 4:15AM PST

The current Dual-Core Intel chips that are in Mac Pro desktops make them fully-functional PCs. This means after doing graphics-intensive productive work (in OS-X of course), we can kick back and play cool PC games like Far Cry and F.E.A.R. Yay!

Now in the PC world, if you have a nice computer with a PCI-E graphics slot, you can buy any of Nvidia's or ATI's latest high-end video cards and play amazing games. Mac users historically were shut out of the gaming market because manufacturers did not release their high-end cards in mac-compatible forms.

The question...has this changed? Can a Mac Pro owner get a new Nvidia gaming card and pwn his friends? Is there even a PC/Mac distinction by the manufacturers anymore? And do you have to buy new cards only from Apple?
