Question

If I run 6 external Hard drives will it affect my RAM

Sep 14, 2015 5:23AM PDT

I have a Acer computer doing nothing but gathering dust and I have 7 hard drives. I have 2 hard drive covers and 2 2 place hard drive docking stations. I want to hook all these to the Acer, with 4 gig of RAM. I forget in all that I have learned on here if I can do this or if I need more RAM or just forget it. Thanks

Answer
Should be possible. I'd add RAM. Do U have enough USB ports?

Just connecting these drives isn't going to tax the RAM that much; it really depends on what you do with them more than anything. 4 GB RAM is a bit minimal these days, and RAM's not that expensive, so I'd up it to 8 GB just for good measure. If you don't have enough USB ports, you can get expansion cards to give you more.

Good luck.

RAM and USB Ports
Sep 15, 2015 2:33AM PDT

Thanks for your answer. Yeah, I am going to increase the RAM. I will be using the drives as a place to store things I think I still need. I think all of us that has been with computers a while have files that you just hate to delete. I have all these drives lying around so why not use them. USB ports I should have plenty.
Take care and God Bless

Re: RAM

If it's just for file storage and backup, 4 GB of RAM is more than enough.

In fact, if it has a 32 bit OS, it won't even use anything more. And since it seems an old computer gathering dust, it might not have a 64 bit O, so then any byte above 4 GB is a waste of money.

I think it's a foolish idea

unless this will be completely disconnected from the internet. You could risk losing all your information under some conditions, than if you just plugged a drive when needed.

This will be in house storage and use only.
