Yes. Use an Ethernet cable. Of course, this assume that the devices that feed that lan socket still have power to work.

so if i can still use my Lan socket even though router power was gone it would be a great relief :o)
When the power goes off at your location the following happens:
1. The lights go out
2. The Broadband Modem goes off
3. The Wireless Router goes off
4. Hubs & Switches and LAN Sockets go off
Bottom line; you will have NO internet service to connect to with your battery powered laptop
The way to fix this problem is to plug the Modem & Router into a Battery Backup System, aka an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that will keep those devices running during the power outage

i have just looked at my router and it uses 12 volts, dc, so i will buy a 12v rechargeable batt pack with charger so i will always have constant supply :o)
Your Router uses 12V DC which is supplied from a power adapter which requires 110V/240V AC.
Is your router also your modem or do you have a separate one?
P
my router is also my modem so if the power goes , then yes, it will all turn off, i have sourced a 12v sealed lead acid batt but am looking for a charger :o)
where can i purchase a device that will let me plug into the internet via phone socket without the need for a power source, or do i always need a power source for a modem/router?
This can easily be done with a dialup connection (USB modem or internal modem). But I assume you have ADSL.
This can be done on a desktop via a PCI ADSL-card, like http://www.chipweb.de/dsl/index.php?menu=2&id2=18. But I assume you have a laptop.
So you're out of luck.
