Question

If I format my laptop, will Win. 10 install automatically?

by Haiko8 / January 20, 2016 7:18 AM PST

So what I'm trying to do is format my laptop which right now has Windows 10 on it. When I bought the laptop 3 years ago it came with Windows 8 installed on it. I upgraded for free later on when Windows 10 came out.

What I want to know is that now, after my free upgrade to Windows 10, if I try to format my computer and delete everything on it, will it install Windows 10 automatically, or would it go back and install Windows 8 just like from when it came from the factory?

If it installs Windows 8, what do I have to do to get Windows 10 again.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

If you format it, it won't do anything until you initiate some recovery or install. So you have to know what to do after formatting.

In fact, there is no need to format. Just do a clean install from the disk or stick you make with the Windows Media Creation tool from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

and your reason for doing this is...

why? But remember, the application/s that came with win8 will not be migrated to win10. when you wipe the Hdd. clean. Personally I like to get hold of the win10 key first. You can do this with Belarc.

Windows 10 upgrade doesn't use a key.

When you do the upgrade Windows 10 is activated using a electronic signature and creates a hash number based on your hardware and that info is stored on the MS servers. When you do a clean install it verifies the hash number and will activate the clean install.

Windows 10 will not install automatically

Once your laptop is formatted, Windows 10 will not be installed automatically. You will have to install it manually. You will either have to install it using DVD or USB drive. First you have to download the installation files on DVD/USB and make it bootable, so that after format when you switch on your laptop, it detect DVD/USB and start installing Windows 10.

However, this is a tedious task which requires patience as you have to do it manually.

Hope this solved your querie.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
