Resolved Question

IE8 showing older IE Icon

Feb 27, 2012 1:21PM PST

IE 8 is showing an older icon version in the quick start bar and on the desktop.
I have re-installed it from microsoft.com so it's genuine.
My computer specs are on my profile if they are needed

Just point it to the proper icon library ...

in this key in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

1.. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)

2.. Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

3.. In the Right Window double click DefaultIcon

4.. The value should be C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieframe.dll,-190

5.. Change that to the icon number you want then, leaving regedit open, click once on the desktop and press the F5 key to refresh. If you selected the wrong icon number regroup and try again. (Hint, 191 is a yellow star)
