ie7 vs ip browser software

Dec 22, 2006 1:11AM PST

Hi. I am still learning about pcs and tech stuff, so excuse me if my question seems silly. What is difference in someone using ie7 and using browser software from say, Verizon? It seems the info is the same.

Usually just customization...

Verizon, AT&T, etc. usually just create a shell for Internet Explorer...their browser uses IE's rendering engine, among other components, but has a revised look and feel and may integrate with other software or services they offer. You may find that some of their browsers will not work properly, if at all, after you install Internet Explorer 7, in which case you would have to choose between IE7 or reverting back to IE6 so you can continue using the ISP's browser until they update it. Since Internet Explorer is at the core it's just a matter of which you would rather use.

Thanks for the info. Supposedly the new IE offers anti-phishing tools. Would this work on the Verizon browser?

I'm not sure...

The anti-phishing protection is not built directly into the Trident rendering engine so it would depend on how the Verizon shell was developed. (Unless the browser wass updated for IE7 my assumption would be that it does not utilize the phishing protection, but I could be wrong.) Your best bet would be to contect Verizon Yahoo's technical support using the internet chat option and see if they can shed some light on the matter. If you do, let us know what their response is...it would be good to know for future reference.
