IE6 Problem?

Nov 19, 2003 1:46AM PST

HP Pavilion, P4 1.5mhz, 512 mb memory, XP Home

IE6 works OK when browsing the internet but when Belarc Advisor tries to use it to display the results of its systen scan, IE6 opens as usual but does not display the HTML file created by Belarc. Refresh has no effect. This has worked well in the past but some problem has crept in. Any ideas?

If this is the ONLY issue. Don't fix it.

You can copy the URL of the report and try another web browser such as Mozilla.

Thanks for your quick reply, Bob. Will try what you suggest but will need to install another browser first. What confuses me is why IE6 won't do the job now when it had no problems a couple of months ago when I last used Belarc. BTW, it is the only problem.

David, ran SFC but did not fix the problem. . If I click on the Belarc results HTML file in the Belarc folder, IE6 starts but the file is not displayed. If I type the address of the Belarc results HTML file into the address line of IE6, the file will display OK. I checked in File Types that IE6 is associated with HTML files so this is not the problem. If you have any other ideas on what the problem might be I'd be glad to hear them; otherwise I'll forget about Belarc and use Sandra or Aida when I need to do a scan.

Try this fix:

Fix for Explorer:

1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll,
4. Click OK.
When you receive the 'DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded' message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files
(in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

Don't forget to leave a space between 'regsvr32' and the .dll,
and don't forget to click OK

David, tried your fix using all the dll files one after the other but the problem remained. Had a look at the event log but no mention of what the problem might be. Playing around, I opened Add/Remove Windows Components, unchecked Internet Explorer to remove access to IE from the start menu and the desktop and then checked the Internet Explorer box to reverse the process. Tried Belarc and, wonder of wonders, IE came up displaying the results of the scan! Do you have any idea why the Add/Remove process resolved the problem?

After the procedure above, did scans with Ad-aware and SpySweeper and both identified something called Alexa Toolbar, associated with IE6 in some way, as being a potential problem. Did as recommended and erased the spyware but would be interested in finding out just what the Alexa Toolbar is.

Ron, you've discovered a new fix!

I've not heard of this one!
But as long as it wirks. Good for you Ron.

I wonder if uninstalling and reinstalling Belarc would have solved it too?
That was hwta I was going to suggest next.

As for Alexa in SpyBot when you click the item a note pops up to give you some info on this so called spyware.

As Keith said it's minor. It's part of I.E. and can be left in or removed if you want to.
