IE6 Browser/ Windows 98- Media doesn't play in browser

Sep 5, 2005 10:27PM PDT

I have a small, but irksome problem. Whenever I visit a web site with media files, it decides to download instead (as if I were downloading a file), rather than just play in the browser. What gives?

Some web sites do that,

but in IE go to Tools > Internet Options, click the Advanced tab, and scroll down to Multimedia.

If the tick boxes for "Play animations/sounds/videos" are unticked, place a tick in each as you need. Click Apply, then OK, then reload IE.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. But unfortunately, these options

Thanks, anyway.

OK, can you

give me an example of such a web site?

Like I say, some sites will only allow movie clips to be downloaded as embedded streaming of videos is differently coded.

Just to be clear about the problem, you are using IE, (Internet Explorer), and on a site where there is a movie clip, (a trailer or something like that), when you click the link IE pops up with a "Downloading file" window, instead of opening up your Windows Media Player to play the clip.

Is that it?

Oh, wait-- I think I figured out the problem! :-|

I think it was my download manager. It seems as if it doesn't allow embedded media to play in browsers, and downloads them instead. I disabled it today and was able to visit some media sites.

Thanks for your help-- I wasn't very aware of the Internet Options--> Advanced features before your advice, so now I've learned something new. Thanks! Happy
