ie6 browser opens whenever computer boots

Jul 1, 2004 3:43AM PDT

Compaq Presario, 900 AMD Athlon, XP PRO

I have turned off every auto-update feature in the control panel and in internet options, but everytime my computer boots up ie6 opens automatically and goes to the windows update page. Homepage is set to Google, and when I click the Home button, it goes to Google just fine.

Any Suggestions?

1. The article [Q316530] explains and discusses why that when you start your WinXP-based computer or start a program, the modem may attempt to automatically dial a connection to your Internet service provider (ISP).

2. The article [Q291818] explains that by default, WMPlayer downloads Codecs automatically when you need them to play a file.

3. By default, the AutoDial feature will connect to the Internet automatically depending on what you do on the local computer and you want to control the dial-up manually (CP, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, then double-click Services and the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager. Click Stop to shutdown the service, set the Startup type at Disabled, and then click OK).

Note: To connect to the Internet manually, use whatever Internet connection you specified in Network Connections.

Although I am on broadband cable, I followed your advice, and it worked. I had to go back and re-enable some of the apps that I wanted at startup, and had to re-download and reinstall my Sygate firewall, but it was worth it to alleviate that annoying automatic opening of IE6. My Compaq Presario is an old machine, with a 900 AMD Athlon, and a clean install of Win XP Pro, with 320 megs of RAM. Everything is working fine now. Thanks for the post.
