IE stopped both automatic redirect and find command

Mar 22, 2005 3:34AM PST

Yeah, ummm... Yesterday, Internet Explorer stopped allowing automatic redirecting. I found it out when I tried to enter my hotmail account. A page came up saying something to the effect that "the settings were set to not allow automatic redirecting to new URLs" then there was a link saying "click here" and no matter if you click the link or not, you get sent to a blank page where nothing happens. I did some messing around and the same thing happens with any page that redirects you somewhere else.
Then, a couple hours later, I found that the "ctrl+f" find on page command no longer works. You can bring the window up, and you can type in a word to look for, but the "Find Next" button never highlights, and you can't actually look for the word.

The really wierd part of this is that we are using Windows XP home edition, and it is only happening on one of the user accounts we have.

I don't know what might have happened, there are three or four people who might use that specific account, so I don't know how this happened, and I tried fiddling around, but can't figure out how to fix it. Can anyone help me?

quick correction.

Just a quick note. I said that only one of the accounts being used has this problem. I was wrong. I did some more experimenting and I found that three of the four accounts have this problem.
Please help, I'm begging.

Your work to detect and remove Spyware. IE is a target so such things happen. While we can remove spyware, the damage can remain and depending on the OS, repair may or may not be possible without wiping out and reinstalling the OS.

Have you heard about this issue (spyware)?

well...

Yes, I do know about spyware. But... I... actually hadn't even considered the possibility. So I ran spybot Search & Destroy, and it did find a bunch of spyware. (I'm usually much better at keeping a clean computer.) SS&D did it's job, but the problem remains. Do you really think that a re-install is the only solution?

I noted some of what was missing from your post.

The OS for example. Repair of IE varies with each OS.

But why fix this? I just use Firefox or Mozilla today to sidestep the spyware gunfire.
