The discussion at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6142-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=32661&messageID=375631 pretty much tells all. If SP2 creates a problem then its too likely that SPYWARE or such may have been present and now is gumming up the works.
So far, SP2 does not create problems on clean machines...

I use to have an Emonster 500 (which worked like a dream) and received an upgrade to the Emachine T4155 Feb. 2002. I have never had a problem with this machine either until the more recent windows updates. One of the automatic updates messed up my email and some of my other programs so badly, I had to restore my computer last month. After some of the comments I read and heard about SP2, I decided not to use the disc to install it. Microsoft willl not let you download SP1 any longer so I decided to download SP2 and hope for the best. Wrong decision. After installation, my computer kept rebooting and never came back up again. I tried again the next day and it was still in reboot. Of course the only way to get my computer back was to restore it again. This time I did not have the option of saving information. I went to the IE site and discovered I could get a disc for SP1 and am waitig for it now. What is going on with Microsofts updates these days which are more problem causing than upgrade??????
