Resolved Question

IE running with add-ons disabled

Dec 31, 2011 1:44AM PST

I downloaded AVG PC tune-up and now get a message that internet explorer is running with add-ons disabled. I contacted AVG but they are useless.

When I go to manage the add-ons, they are all listed as enabled. I even tried resetting IE but it didn't help.

I can't look at youtube and lots of other things now. How can I get the add-ons to work again?

I have Windows XP.

Thanks for any help.

More details

I have already tried the fixes that have been shared. When I try to manage add-ons, the list says they are all enabled. Apparently, there is supposed to be a choice between running IE with add-ons and without. My only choice at the start menu right now says "internet explorer (no add-ons)". None of the help fixes the problem.

I don't know why I've never been able to go to a restore point. I have AVG anti-virus. When I go to a restore point, the computer goes through the moves but says it was unable to perform the action. It says that there is a restore point, but was unable to restore the computer to that point.

Thanks for the efforts.

That's good. Now do this.

Create a new shortcut to Internet Explorer and it will work much better.

O.K.

I did what you said and had a new IE tab in the start menu without the words "no add-ons". However, the window opened the same as usual, with no add-ons.

Then, I opened it again and chose the option that came up that said "open with this disabled" and for some reason, that fixed the problem. I still have no idea what was wrong or exactly how it is fixed, but all is sort of back to normal. It seems like there was some HP file that wasn't doing what it used to do.

Thanks everyone!

If by chance

If by chance you copied that shortcut it would be the same. I can't tell what you did but had hoped you would create a new shortcut the usual way. From scratch on the desktop then drag and drop onto the menu.

That's one of those apps I would not use.

These tend to do more damage than good. Restore the machine to before the tuneup.

I sadly forgot to mention that my computer has never allowed me to restore to an earlier point. Thanks for your time, though.

I would be concerned about that

"my computer has never allowed me to restore to an earlier point"

Why is that and what error messages do you get?

Does Windows allow you to "Create" a Restore Point?

Do you use Norton's 360 or similar Norton's product? That is known to disable System Restore.
