IE problems with new reinstall of windows

Jul 30, 2007 8:36PM PDT

I am running a home network from a Netgear DG834GT router (one laptop and one desktop). I've just reinstalled a clean version of windows XP on the desktop on a new HD as I changed the mobo and CPU.

The laptop is still connecting perfectly to the internet via wireless or LAN cable from the router and has no browsing problems at all.

The desktop when plugged into the LAN to the router shows an immediate internet connection (shared connection) of 7.2mbits as well as the local network connection to the router. However it delays when connecting to websites, comes up with error pages, says the connection has timed out etc...These are all pages that the laptop simultaniously has no problem with.

I upgraded to IE 7 from IE 6 thinking this might solve whatever is going wrong but the same things occur. I've run the diagnostic tool in Internet Explorer 7 and it shows no problem connecting to the internet. I've also installed Firefox and this pulls up errors too.

I've disabled the Windows xp firewall as the router has a built in one and the desktop is running Nod32 as antivirus. The router is setup with exactly the same settings as before the big upgrade so I can't see what would have changed.

It's really odd - the desktop will display yahoo and click through to any of the links but won't search from yahoo.

Any ideas? Its really frustrating me!

Did You Install All Drivers?
Jul 31, 2007 12:55AM PDT

Try an updated ethernet driver.. Likewise with all your other hardware..Video, audio, motherboard/chipset, etc. They all may have an impact on performance on the internet and otherwise.

Make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed for XP and afterwards, be sure to visit the Windows Update site and install all the "High Priority" updates.. In addition to security updates, some are "fixes" for various problems.

Have you installed the most recent version of Sun Java.. For many webpages, it will help them load better:

And to make sure the connection software is installed right, try downloading and running the WinsockXPFix tool from the link below:

Hope this helps.

A Few Things
Jul 31, 2007 2:00AM PDT

Since I see the only other answer is based largely on superstition and a set of catch-all solutions that sometimes work, even if most people don't understand why...

Important Thing To Remember #1: If Program 1.0 fails to work correctly, odds are very small that Program 2.0 will magically correct this problem. Especially when it involves basic functionality, like loading web pages in a web browser. More often than not, if Program 1.0 has problems, installing Program 2.0 over top will only compound matters.

Important Thing To Remember #2: If two unrelated programs that perform the same function fail in similar ways, you should look for anything the two have in common, and focus your search there. In the case of two web browsers failing in nearly identical ways, start looking to network related things for the source of the problem.

Important Thing To Remember #3: Video, chipset, sound, etc, drivers have little to no impact on anything relating to your ability to load web pages. Don't waste your time with these things for a network related issue.

Important Thing To Remember #4: Internet Explorer is really unsafe to use for any amount of time. The only real exception is using it to install new security updates via Windows/Office/Microsoft Updates. It's a calculated risk, but one that is worth taking. All other web browsing should be done with your choice of Firefox, Opera, or Safari.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the answers guys.

I had updated drivers etc...(my mobo was only released a couple of weeks ago so the install cd was bang up to date).

What I ended up doing was reformating the op sys drive and reinstalling windows - less hassle than spending any more time trying to figure it out as all I had done was install XP and put through all of the priority updates.

Strangely enough....2nd time round everything worked perfectly!

I don't usually use IE - just was using it whilst getting things up and running and then going to install firefox however firefox was having the same issues! It was a network problem -something to do with the protocols and internet sharing but it worked plug and play after the fresh install as it was supposed to in the first place.

Thanks once again for taking the time to reply though.
