I have windows 98 with IE v6 and when I attempt to view certain pages it locks up completely. I attempted to view these on a different machine with windows XP and they worked correctly, but an applet called acutescroller started. the page I tried to view was http://www.vicon-cctv.com/indexUS.html
any help on what I may need to download would be appreciated. thanks

Download and install the latest Java engine:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
Install JRE 5.0 Update 3.
That should solve the problem.

thanks for the suggestions, i tried both of them (firefox and jre 5.0) and the computer still locks up when attempting to view that page. it locks up in firefox as well as IE
Is IE (or Firefox) locking up or the entire machine?
The solutions offered will vary depending on this.
Bob
the machine locks up when attempting to view this site with both IE and firefox. It begins to try and load the page, but almost immediately locks up and cannot be restored
You had the in your first post. I read that IE locked up, not the machine.
-> Java applications can cause the CPU load to hit 100% and stay there. Fragile machines which lockup under load tend to show this issue.
Fixes vary widely from dusting the machine out, cleaning a heatsink, replacing a fan to fitting a proper size power supply.
But details about the machine (age, beauty, etc.) are missing in your post so I can't narrow it down.

the machine is a 3-4 year old toshiba satellite laptop with a p3 processor and probably not much ram. it is a pretty fragile machine and will routinely lock up when attempting to run cpu intensive processes. I will try dusting it out, but i guess for now i will just use another machine to access that site... thank you for the help
1. Get out that can of compressed air and blow out the heatsinks and air ducts. Beginner repair skill level.
2. If you are really into fixing things, disassemble it just enough to get to the CPU heatsink. Put a fresh dab of heatsink compound on and button it all back up. About middle of the road PC repair skill.
3. Unplug the RAM sticks and put them back in to scrub the contacts. BE GENTLE!
