IE keeps losing history files

Mar 25, 2005 9:01AM PST

I have my IE 6.0 history set to save my history for 14 days, but everytime I disconnect from the internet they are erased. This just started a few days ago, and up until then I had no problem, they would be saved fine. I've set and re-set the setting, re-booted, signed off and on the inernet then re-set it again and again and again. It just won't save my history files anymore once I disconnect from the internet Anyone have any idea what happened? I didn't add or delete anything, change any other settings, or anything else. I tried to repair IE by going to Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, but IE isn't listed there, which is weird too!

SPECS:
Dell Dimension 3000, 512MB Ram, 80Gb hard drive
Win XP Home, SP2
McAfee AV and firewall
Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D
Eartlink Dial-up ISP
Outlook Express e-mail

Thanks for any help,
Kat

Clearing "History"
Mar 25, 2005 9:25PM PST

I don't know what your computer has on it but should you have and use M$ PowerToys - TweakUI, there is a setting on the Paranoia tab:

Check the "Clear Internet Explorer history at logon" box to cause the Internet Explorer URL history to be erased each time you log on.

This is a per-user setting.

Thanks for the tip. Where would I find MS Power Toys?

Do you want it or where does it exist on a system?

1. TweakUI when installed is initiated from the Control Panel.

2. The Microsoft PowerToys "TweakUI" can be downloaded that will give you access to system settings that are not exposed in the default user interface and include mouse settings, Explorer settings, taskbar settings, and a host of others:

Note: When considering what an option is and what it does, right-click the item and select "What is".

? Open Command Window Here - adds this context menu option on file system folders, giving you a quick way to open a command window (cmd.exe) pointing at the selected folder.

? Alt-Tab Replacement - in addition to seeing the icon of the application window you are switching to, you will also see a preview of the page. This helps particularly when multiple sessions of an application are open.

? Power Calculator - you can graph and evaluate functions as well as perform many different types of conversions.

? Image Resizer - enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

? CD Slide Show Generator - you can view images burned to a CD as a slide show. The Generator works downlevel on Windows 9x machines as well.

? Virtual Desktop Manager - manage up to four desktops from the Windows taskbar with this PowerToy.

? Taskbar Magnifier - magnify part of the screen from the taskbar.

? HTML Slide Show Wizard - helps you create an HTML slide show of your digital pictures, ready to place on your Web site.

? Webcam Timershot - lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate.

3. My first was a description of how History may be cleared if using TweakUI. It, and I'm sure there are other software applications which may cause this same anomaly that may be used that cause the same affect that nobody but you could know about. If you don't know, you'll have to ascertain what is being used by investigating what runs on your system, deactivate it/them, or at least check the option for everything activated to see if such an option exists and change it.

TweakUI

I couldn't find it on my system so I downloaded it from the link you provided above. WOW! I'm going to go try it out and see if I can fix my problem.
Thanks very very much!

My first only hinted that should that TweakUI option be set, it would cause the reported problem. Since you didn't supposedly have TweakUI to begin with, then it certainly wouldn't be the culprit -- neither do I believe having it now that it can fix any existing problems, even though it is capable of fixing certain anomalies. Basically, this utility simply makes it easier for certain users to change a few options as they see fit.
