IE cannot load cnet page...operation aborted error

Mar 14, 2007 10:42PM PDT

When I open a forum to get the thread list everything is fine, so is create a new thread as well as reply....however,

Since the 'sticky notes' feature went into effect yesterday, when I right click a thread to open in a new window to read it and get the list of replies under it, I get a 'IE cannot open the internet site (url for that page given here)....operation aborted'.

Then the page supposedly finishes loading with that error dialog box still on the screen and immediately redirects to 'page cannot be found'.

Trying to start over gives the same results; however, if I then go to the address bar, highlight the url and press Enter, it refreshes the page and loads up just fine without the error.

Has anybody else experienced this? I took a screenshot and sent it to Lee this morning since the same issues are still happening.

I had, yesterday afternoon, emptied my TIF files and wonder if there was something in there that created this problem for me if I'm the only one experiencing this; however, no other site gives me this error message...only the cnet forums and only when I try to right click and read the posts in a separate window. I just (while typing this) also tried just clicking any thread and opening it in the same window the forum page was using (to eliminate the possibility that my 'right click open in new window' option is broken, but I get the same results.

The page begins to load up, it gets nearly to the end and it pops up with the error dialog box and completes the loading...then immediately redirects to 'page cannot be found'.

Since ads are rotated, I don't think it's an ad or it would only happen when one specific ad was trying to load up. I suspect the 'make sticky' feature that was just added yesterday. If it's my system only, I need to find out what I need to do at this end to fix it if nobody else is having issues with it.

Did they do any more tweaking since
Mar 21, 2007 6:52AM PDT

last night when I had the problem again Lee? I just now started trying IE again when you posted this. I will let you know.

- Collapse -
Yes he has done a couple of tweaks and applied them
Mar 21, 2007 7:38AM PDT

yesterday at 6:20pm PST.

If you don't experience any issues, then the last tweak he did solved it. Carol is not seeing the issue any more so I'm crossing my fingers that you don't see them anymore also.

Thanks Rod for all your help... we are going into this blind as we can't reproduce the error on our end. So again thank you for all the help.

So far so good then Lee. Originally, last week
Mar 21, 2007 7:48AM PDT

when you first turned the notifier on, I could not get to CNET by clicking on the e-mail notice. I would get the error. As I said last week, I use Firefox here normally EXCEPT when I click on an e-mail link because I have IE7 set as default.

Anyway, last night, after he did the first tweaks. I was able to get here by clicking on the e-mail notice link AND I was able to post one time so I thought it was fixed BUT as soon as I clicked on "return to discussion", the error came and then came the "can not display page". Today since these last tweaks, I have made a few posts and no problem. Knock on wood. Happy

If you see the error please note the time and date.

Thank you!!

I spoke too soon. I made the post and

In addition to the time and date stamp can you guys include
Mar 20, 2007 9:56AM PDT

a few more details:

-- Browser (type + version)
-- OS
-- Exact steps to reproduce (for example: every forums link or just some links?) Any odd or irregular settings (browser specific)
-- Are you running any malware programs?

All this info will be very helpful!

Thanks everyone!

Lee, I am using IE7 just
Mar 20, 2007 10:20AM PDT

as I said in the previous posts from last week, Toni was using IE6 and was also getting the error. I do NOT have a problem using Firefox.Operating system is XPSP2 but CursorCowboy also had problems last time using W98. This happens whenever I try to use IE such as clicking on the e-mail notice. It also happened since you turned the "notifier" back on when I left clicked on "return to discussion". The timestamp makes no difference whatsoever because it happens whatever time I try to use IE in CNET. As far as malware programs, I use a suitcase full so I can learn them and help people with them. I don't care to list them all but I really really doubt any of them are causing this problem. This is the ONLY website on the internet that I am having this problem and ONLY when you turn the notifier on. Sorry if this does not help you any but the problem is definately is with the notifier. Happy

Having problem
Apr 2, 2007 6:10AM PDT

I just started getting this error today that everyone else in this thread was having. Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site, operation aborted. It is only on the CNET Forums and only using Internet Explorer 7. I have no problems with any other sites with Internet Explorer. I can view the CNET Forums with AOL or the u3 version of Firefox on my Flash Drive. Just wanted to post to make you aware of the problem. slybo

Apr 2, 2007 6:30AM PDT

I did not realize you had seen Sly's post already. I just tried IE7 a few more times and I am NOT getting the error. Strange how some do and some don't, especially seeing as I was one of the ones that was getting it before.

yes still problem
Apr 2, 2007 7:26PM PDT

I went and watched tv and went to bed, just got up and saw your post. Checked and yes I still have the same problem, the fix did not work for me. Also this is happening on both computers I have. One computer was built by a local computer shop and the other is a Compaq Presario. Both are XP sp2 and Internet Explorer 7. I have them connected to a Netgear router with cable, do not have wireless, to broadband cable Time Warner. I have all the updates from the Windows update site. I hope these details help. slybo

I just came to the cnet forums and now getting the error with AOL, just like internet explorer. I can only get to cnet forums using my u3 version of Firefox. In other words it has gotten worse AOL is now included. This is on both of my computers. slybo

People experiencing the IE "Operation abort" error pls read.
Apr 3, 2007 6:26AM PDT

This applies to Internet Explorer users only. FireFox user are not affected.

We been digging around at this bug and what I discovered is that this error only appears on discussion thread pages--not on the CNET forum directory or on the forum listing pages.

I also discovered that you will get this error only if you are not logged into CNET. So if you log in, you should not receive this error.

So to prevent this from happening, go to the CNET forum directory page here: http://forums.cnet.com , go to the top right hand corner of the page and login to CNET and check the "remember me" box. Once you've logged in you should be able to access any forum discussion thread without any issues.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Thanks and I apologize for this inconvenience. I'm hoping we will have this fixed soon.

Best regards,

Lee, I was ALWAYS logged in when it was
Apr 3, 2007 6:38AM PDT

happening to me. I NEVER sign out. I no longer have the problem but I also have the notifier shut off which is not big deal to me because I prefer the e-mail notices.

CAn you try logging off in IE and coming back to this page..
Apr 3, 2007 6:46AM PDT

and see what happens... This may have nothing to do with the notifier this time.

I was finally able to reproduce this error when I was logged out of the forums. Turning the notifier on or off didn't make a difference for me.

Let me know.

Thanks!

Yes it worked

I have posted in the other places but to be sure you see this I will post here. That did work for me with IE7 and AOL and on both my computers. I come here most of the time to just read and only log in to post. Hope that helps you. slybo
