IE cannot load cnet page...operation aborted error

Mar 14, 2007 10:42PM PDT

When I open a forum to get the thread list everything is fine, so is create a new thread as well as reply....however,

Since the 'sticky notes' feature went into effect yesterday, when I right click a thread to open in a new window to read it and get the list of replies under it, I get a 'IE cannot open the internet site (url for that page given here)....operation aborted'.

Then the page supposedly finishes loading with that error dialog box still on the screen and immediately redirects to 'page cannot be found'.

Trying to start over gives the same results; however, if I then go to the address bar, highlight the url and press Enter, it refreshes the page and loads up just fine without the error.

Has anybody else experienced this? I took a screenshot and sent it to Lee this morning since the same issues are still happening.

I had, yesterday afternoon, emptied my TIF files and wonder if there was something in there that created this problem for me if I'm the only one experiencing this; however, no other site gives me this error message...only the cnet forums and only when I try to right click and read the posts in a separate window. I just (while typing this) also tried just clicking any thread and opening it in the same window the forum page was using (to eliminate the possibility that my 'right click open in new window' option is broken, but I get the same results.

The page begins to load up, it gets nearly to the end and it pops up with the error dialog box and completes the loading...then immediately redirects to 'page cannot be found'.

Since ads are rotated, I don't think it's an ad or it would only happen when one specific ad was trying to load up. I suspect the 'make sticky' feature that was just added yesterday. If it's my system only, I need to find out what I need to do at this end to fix it if nobody else is having issues with it.

Glad to see it is not just me. LOL I have
Mar 14, 2007 11:07PM PDT

the same problem Toni. I can get here with Firefox, which I normally use here anyway but my default browser is IE7 so If I click on an e-mail link for a tracked discussion, or even if I copy and paste it into IE7, I am getting exactly the same thing you are. This is the first time I have ever seen that "Operation aborted" error. If I copy and paste the URL into either Firefox or Opera there are no problems whatsoever. Also, as Toni said, this happened exactly the same time as the forum upgrade yesterday. This ONLY happens in the CNET forums. I can link to CNET News with no problems.

(NT) MSIE6 or 7?
Mar 14, 2007 11:08PM PDT
- Collapse -
I'm still using IE6
Mar 14, 2007 11:23PM PDT

but it seems the same thing is happening with IE7....it's something to do with the 'make sticky' or 'rss' links that were added yesterday since they only show up when you go to read a post and they don't appear on the actual forum list page.

Correction and more info
Mar 14, 2007 11:28PM PDT

the 'rss' link shows up on the actual forum list page as I enter a forum and I get no such error dialog box, so it has to be the 'make sticky' link.

I also use the "tree view" and wonder if the same error shows up for a 'thread view' for people. If it's only affecting the 'tree view', that would narrow down what needs to be fixed for those of us who prefer that setting.

Don't know. I use "Threaded view", MSIE6 & Win98

So the same error comes up
Mar 15, 2007 12:41AM PDT

no matter which view we choose...your method of refreshing the page and getting it to properly come up is the same one I've been using.

I have IE6 with XP Pro installed, so it doesn't appear to be browser or windows version specific. Definitely a cnet issue with something new that doesn't play nice.

When that happens at a website, I usually just stop going to that site completely....don't have that luxury with cnet. lol

Rod can you tell me in detail what you are doing to get this
Mar 15, 2007 5:49AM PDT

Any details will help us trouble shoot this issue. Because me nor the engineer can reproduce this error.

Is it when you are right clicking on a forum post link like Toni mentioned above?

Let me know.

Thanks!

I get the error if I click on
Mar 15, 2007 5:59AM PDT

the link in the e-mail note for the tracked discussion OR even if I copy and paste the link into IE. It makes no differnce in my case how I try to access the forums. I simply can not use IE any more here. I gave up and am using Firefox but this definately happened at the same time they upgraded yesterday. I wish I could explain more what is happening but Toni did a good job doing that. It makes a real obnoxious noise when the error shows up also and when you "OK" the error message the page goes to "can't display this page". IF you try to "X" the window out then, you get another warning that you can do damage if you close this window but I have been closing it anyway. Sorry, I'm not describing it very well. LOL

Lee... not Rod but FWIW...

I left-clicked on a link, when I got the same error message as Toni. I closed out IE, then went back to the same link. I didn't get the error message the second time around. Confused

IE cannot open....
Apr 2, 2007 12:09PM PDT

Lee I have just had the same problem when I clicked on a Cnet link from a google search on another subject. So I came directly to Cnet forums, opened a forum and clicked the thread and got the same error on several forums. Hitting refresh also does the same too, the page appears in the background but goes to "cannot find server" when the error box is closed

(NT) yep..still doing it IE6 at 4:15PM EST

left or right click...makes no difference
Mar 15, 2007 6:22AM PDT

Plus now that your techs have tweaked whatever, I get alot of page cannot be found (cnet type window) in addition to the typical IE page of page cannot be found.

This a.m. 3/17/2007
Mar 16, 2007 11:01PM PDT

After clicking the "Mark all as read" at Computer newbies forum (7:48 my Texas time) I immediately got the page display "We're sorry, But the page you requested could not be found."

I clicked the Address bar, pressed ENTER, and the forum main page came back up with the posts correctly marked ":read".

This was only the second time I've had difficulty. Cookies had been cleared since I did have to log-in first for the last two days.

Bill, Toni, Carol, Rod... let me know if this error

is still happening now.

Engineer Dan, just finish deploying a fix -- and we need to confirm to make sure that this is no longer occurring.

Thank you!

Yes it is still happening and here is
Mar 15, 2007 10:16AM PDT

a screen shot of the error that I am seeing along with the obnoxious noise. I have only had computers for about 10 years but this is the first time I have had this particular experience with this error and the noise.

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4128/capture315200771214pmfx9.gif

Once I click OK, I get the usual internet explorer "can't display the page". If I try to refresh the window it times out and if I try to "X" it out after I try to refresh, I get yet another error telling me that Internet Explorer is busy and closing this page will possible cause damage, do you want to continue. I press yes and the page closes. Sorry I don't have a screenshot of the second error.

Can you try clearing the CNET cookies

The last time that I logged out and/or

cleared CNET cookies, it took me 3 days before CNET let me sign in again. Besides Lee, if it was a cookie problem then why are we not having this problem in Firefox or Opera?? I am using Firefox at the moment and having NO trouble with the CNET cookies that have been in there for months now. I really do not want to do that unless you are positive that is the problem. I do NOT think it is though.

No problem here..

I am using IE6 and I believe Roddy is using IE7, if it means anything at all.

Toni is using IE6 .I just now clicked on the same e-mail
Mar 15, 2007 10:59AM PDT

link from the notifier and this time it worked with NO errors. I have NOT cleared cookies, signed out or anything else. Either it is an intermittent problem now or the engineers found something and fixed it in the last 30 minutes or so. I have NO clue what is going on here. LOL

It started working for me
Mar 15, 2007 11:53PM PDT

yesterday late afternoon (around 6PM EST) and when I emailed Lee to thank him, he said that it wasn't fixed yet but that the engineers suspected it was the 'notifier' so they turned it off while they investigated further.

I'm not sure if that's been turned back on with a fix or if it's still turned off, but I haven't had the error since yesterday now.

Yep, It was OK for me last night which I posted
Mar 16, 2007 12:27AM PDT

above about and it is still OK today so far because I clicked on an e-mail notice to get here now with IE and had NO problems at all. Whatever the engineers shut off last night before they went home for the night is what was causing the problem I guess. I hope it stays this way. BTW, I shut off the popup notifier, I prefer the e-mail notices which are working fine at this time.
