IE automatically closes? WinXP totally updated

Mar 14, 2004 11:52AM PST

I think there is something wrong with Internet Explorer. I can open the program and start to open any web page but the moment it finishes downloading all the data IE automatically closes. No other internet related programs do this and I have tried uninstalling IE and reinstalling it. I have also downloaded all the windows updates and done numerous virus scans with no result. What is wrong?

Exactly when did this start? What did you install or uninstall directly prior to this problem starting? What is your ISP? Did you install their software on your PC? Soetimes they alter your version of Explorer to fit to theeir standards. If you installed an explorer update over this it may have caused conflicts. I had a similar experience with IE when I installed Mediacom's software. Generally when you "uninstall" IE it really isn't gone. Just removed from your program lists and desktop. Unfortunately many programs rely on IE to function. Ah yes, Windows proprietary hell. Have you considered Linux?

Hi korty!
I had a similar problem too!
Here's what I recommend ..the first reply answers the question very correctly ..check any new software that has been installed just prior to the occurence of this activity (IE automatically closes?).

I wonder if you are running multiple programs you know ..like i used to run p2p >Kazaa and Imesh.
The problem is if your ISP server does not support multiple data transfers then naturally there will be an overload and therefore one of the programs will automatically shutdown!

So just do a round of check and find out if any program is connecting directly to the internet and shut it down. Like Norton automatically getting updates or Win updates .
Then go ahead and try IE.
I believe this will give you enough ideas do get it working!

I also had that problem. I was using IE6. I updated IE with all the updates, and I got out the reinstall disks for xp that came with my computer. I reinstalled each program and driver individually, rather than dumping everything and totally reinstalling. After that, it worked.
