General discussion

IE a no go.

Aug 23, 2005 9:52AM PDT

Yesterday I tried IE to have a look at Tonis' site, but the page wouldn't come up. Tonight I tried it again, but IE won't come up using either the short cuts, such as the one on the desktop, and the one in the quick start. Then I tried going into Start>Programs>Internet Explorer, but still a no go.

This has happened in the past, and, as I don't normally use IE, I just ignored it. Next time I had to use IE, it was working.

My ISP is Sympatico and they are now hooked up with MSN, and the url reads Sympatico msn. I previously had Sympatico-Netscape, but Netscape dropped out. I use Netscape Messenger as my e-mail, but no longer use it for surfing. It is a very old (4.7) version. IE is now version 6.

Any idea what may be wrong? About the only reason I would use IE is to do updates and to read certain sites, such as Tonis'.

Thank you.

Pat

You should be able to get to and view my site
Aug 23, 2005 10:27AM PDT

with just about any browser, Pat. It's not exclusive to IE.

I would think that perhaps if you have MSN, you automatically HAVE IE even if it's been altered via your ISP with branding. If you still have the 'big blue E' on your desktop, right click and choose Properties (or go to Control Panel/Internet Options instead since it's the same thing that pops up). Then look at the 'programs' tab and see which browser is set as the default (same for the email) and using the drop down arrow, you might have to change it to be what you use the most since you don't seem to care for using IE the majority of the time.

Are you possibly trying to go to my old ajscomputergarden.com site? That one's been shut down for over a year now. My profile should be listing the new homepage/site for me though. Since they updated the profile page, I didn't realize that the website I listed had disappeared and just added it back in.

14 bps is slow, 28 and above is better.

Misunderstanding.
Aug 24, 2005 8:56AM PDT

It's not Tonis' site that I'm trying to get. It is IE itself. From there, of course, I'll go to Tonis' site.

My main browser is Opera and it doesn't do Java. My Netscape is an old version, but IE is version 6. It is IE that doesn't come up. I get the "page not found" screen. You've probably had that screen many times. It says to try again later as the network may be busy, or you are using an old link, etc.

There are some sites for which I need IE. I have "Image Magician" which uses IE and that is where I store images to post elsewhere.

IE is not coming up. Right? Okey dokey. Any ideas? Happy

Have you tried
Aug 24, 2005 10:55AM PDT

repairing IE? Add\Remove Programs should have it listed there if it's been updated recently...click it, click Remove, and you will get three options, one of which is to 'repair'.

If that doesn't work, you can get the ie6setup.exe file that will by-pass the windows update center and start the download and installation immediately for you and will make most corrections enough to be able to get into the update center once you have it fixed enough to reach it.

Have you also checked your 'security' settings for IE/Internet Options to make sure you don't have it set so high that it can't get to pages? What about a HOST file that may be blocking things, since some anti-spyware programs like SpySweeper writes entries to that file and may be messing with you.

Opera should let you view my homepage, but without the java, the script for my menu across the bottom of the banner area won't show up......it does with Firefox and Netscape, even older versions to 4.79 since those are the two main browsers besides IE that I've tested it on.

Thanks Grif but,Pat have you tried Mozilla Forefox?
Aug 24, 2005 8:27PM PDT

Not saying you have a virus but, sometimes a Trojan or virus will disrupt the use of IE. You syill have IE, you can;t delete it.If you have a Windows 98 machine usually the IE is the old version.

Some progress.
Aug 25, 2005 4:21AM PDT

A few days ago, I went into IE click on a link to a video showing the floods that occured during the recent rainstorm. I couldn't get the video in any browser, but the Windows Media Player opened on the left side of the screen and it said that I could continue browsing while I "listened or watched" the video. The video just didn't work.

I couldn't get the Player to close. Today, I can get MSN, as Sympatico/msn.com, but the player is still behind that screen, with a little of the player showing to the left. Using the "arrows" will pull the top screen almost to the far left, but it won't go completely.

How do I close that media player? Then, maybe, it will all be back to normal.

Computers are so much fun. Happy

Thanks.

Pat, Maybe...

To close the WMP window....Is there a Windows Media Player "open window" link in the lower taskbar? If so, simply RIGHT click on it, choose "Close" from the menu.

If there is no Windows Media Player window link in the bottom taskbar, on Windows 98, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then "End Task" on the Windows Media Player program..(probably "wmplayer.exe")

Hope this helps.

Tangomanager ????
Aug 25, 2005 9:16AM PDT

No. There was no WMP in the running tasks and it is not in the task bar.

There was, however, something called "Tangomanager". Does that mean anything? (Shall we dance? Happy )

I got it.

I kept running the mouse over the WMP screen and finally a box said "close". Tsk. How simple can it get? Why the heck can't they put an X there like everyone else?

Thanks Grif.

Earth: Thank you for your input. I already have the latest version of IE and my Windows Updates are up to date.
