IE 6

Sep 28, 2005 11:31PM PDT

When using IE 6 to log into Ebay, the moment I enter my user name the browser locks up and I have to go to task manager to close it. Firefor is ok. Ideas? Thanks.

You can try cleaning out the spyware with the free EWIDO demo at google.com

1. the moment I enter my user name

You just type a few characters, do nothing else, and it happens?

2. I have to go to task manager to close it.

a. No error rendered/written to the screen when this freeze supposedly happens?

b. When you access Task Manager to close IE, what status does it say IE is in?

c. Have you tried an IE Repair (Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, IE, etc.?

d. Latest software/utilities/programs installed? Have you check their options to see if they could circumvent E-bay access.

PART I:

1. Three links for your reading pleasure:

a. "Browser Helper Objects: The Browser the Way You Want It?

b. "What is a Browser Helper Object?."

c. "BHODemon" that can be downloaded may assist with your situation perhaps.

2. "Itty Bitty Process Manager (IBProcMan)" - a ZIP file download and requires no installation:

I've been seeing more and more cases of infections by trojans that kill any antivirus or antispyware programs you try to use and remove them. For such cases, I created a standalone version of the 'Itty Bitty Process Manager' inside HijackThis. It should be a bit harder for trojans to detect, since it has no window caption. If they do start targeting it by filename, rename the executable before running it and you should be good to go.

A standalone version of the little process manager included in HijackThis (Misc Tools section). Shows full paths to processes, optionally shows DLLs loaded by processes. Can save the process list (and dll list) to file, as well as copy it to the clipboard. Compatible with at least Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP and newer.

Very useful for cleaning up systems infected with trojans or viruses that kill antivirus and antispyware programs.

PART II:

1. The "Hosts" file (image) is used for host name resolution and found in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\ for Windows NT/2000/XP Pro, or c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ for XP Home. To open the file using Notepad, start Notepad, and then use a drag-and-drop operation with the Hosts file (or Hosts.sam file) into the open Notepad document. Learn all you want about a Hosts file:

a. "Welcome to Ray Marron's Hostess page!" for a free utility for maintaining Hosts files.

b. "Gorilla Design Studio", Using the Hosts file.

2. Check whether i.i.com.com has been added to this file. When accessing CNET for the first time and anytime thereafter, sixty-plus files -- a huge amount IMHO -- are downloaded in the TIF cache by: i.i.com, m3.doubleclick.net, reviews.cnet.com, www.cnet.com, and ads.com.com.

Scans
Oct 3, 2005 11:23PM PDT

Finally got to do all the scans including EWIDO, nothing... I generally do not use IE, only for Windows updates and a couple of places that have to use Active X... Total freeze when entering the password..no messages other than ''not responding''. Also, noticed this password issue is not only for Ebay, seems all sites that require it...

After scans... IEFIX.

IEFIX (google.com) is the next step.

Best of luck,
