Are you sure

Are you sure they are "Internet Explorer" files? Where are they, what is the PATH for these files?

It is possible that these are just "Temporary Internet Files" and they can be deleted, but the correct way is best.

IE5

Hi Mark, thanks for replying. Some of them are temp files, and some are not. If I go to the start button and type in ie5+contents... holy smoke.. there are folders and subfolders and some have nothing in them. Where do they come from and why do I have them? What are they used for? If I delete some folders with nothing in them, will it mess up my registry? One important question is: How come Norton's does not detect them?
Have a good day, at least its a beautiful sunny day.

First step then

I still don't know the path to (location of) these files and that might give a big clue.

For example, the path/location of Windows 7s "Temporary Internet Files" is;
C:\Users\{UserName}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
where {Username} is the name of the account you are logged into Windows with.

I'm sure these are remnants of the previous IE you had installed. I'm not sure why you think Norton should have detected them.

You can try to delete these in a couple of ways.

1] The IE method.

Open IE then go to Tools > Internet Options. In the General tab click the Settings button for "Browsing History", then in the new window click the "View Files" button. This will show you where these files are if they are the same files/location as your upgraded IE.

Back to the General tab and click the Delete button. Then back to the Settings button to see if they have been deleted.

2] CCleaner

If that doesn't work, download and install the free version of CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Run that and without making changes to settings, run the scanner to scan your system for all temporary files, then let CCleaner delete them all.

One word of warning. CCleaner will also delete all your cookies. if you want to keep some, before running that scanner, head over to Options > Cookies, and asve the cookies you want to keep.

Hope that helps.

The last OS to come with IE5, I think, was Windows 98. So there can't be any remnant of IE5 on your Vista computer. You really have to tell more about these folders and files.

Files and folders, indeed, DO come from somewhere. But nobody can tell from where. But they always have a full name, which you didn't give.
The word "contents", however, me agree with Mark that it probably are your Temporary Internet Files. Mark told you how to find out and how to clean it. If any folders remain (usually with an 8 character random folder name) those can be deleted from Windows Explorer or My Computer (but you'll find they are hidden). However, new ones will created as soon as you go browsing again. That's the way it should be.

Norton only detects viruses. Why do you think these are viruses?
