and try to format it in another machine or in an external enclosure.
My guess is there is a rather big chance it will fail also. But your only way of finding out is by trying it.

I have an old computer (Pentium 4 2.40 Hz, 512Gb RAM, IDE Hard drive 80Gb). It was really slow so I decided to reinstall my windows system and format the disk.
I booted the PC using my windows XP CD, it asked to format the C: drive. At the end of the format process, an error message was displayed saying that the format process couldn't be completed.
Now, when I start the computer the BIOS does not find the IDE hard drive.
What should I do?
