IDE Channel 2/3/4/5

by jimpghpa / June 23, 2007 11:27 AM PDT

Just curious
I have an MSI PM8M-V MB and I was looking at the bios and there is the typical
IDE channel 0 master
IDE channel 0 slave
IDE channel 1 master
IDE channel 1 slave

then there is also
IDE channel 2 master
IDE channel 3 master
IDE channel 4 master
IDE channel 5 master

wondered what these are for
there are only 2 ide sockets on the board supporting 4 ide devices
what is the purpose of 2/3/4/5 and what can they be used for? just curious.........

To help ease driver implementation some BIOS will report SATA channels as you noted.

It could make installing an os or drivers harder. There are numerous other areas that will make you ask such a question but almost always it comes back to legacy or expediency reasons.
