Each IDE port (parallel IDE or PATA) supports 2 devices. No cable can break this limit.
This should give you good support as your machine likely has 2 IDE ports or 4 drives total.
I have a dell dimension. I want to install a second hard drive. The problem is the IDE cable inside the machine does not have an extra port. I want to know what I need to do.
Is it possible to get a new cable that has 1 more port than the ones that I have? I currently have a IDE cable that goes from the mother board, to the CDRW drive, to the DVD drive, then to the Hard Drive. There is no 3.5" drive. Is it possible to get a IDE cable that would have one more port and just replace the one I have? If so what specification would I need to look for in a cable?
The specs on the system are as follow,
Dell Dimension, w/ P4 1800 MHz, 512 MB ddr ram, integrated everything else. It is running Microsoft XP Pro SP2. It only has a 40g hard drive which is starting to fill up. I have recently purchased 2 laptops for me and my wife and want to use the desktop as a file server. It is working great but it is going to eventually run out of space. Thanks for all the help!
