Such is not in Windows XP, but can be in Explorer. The "base OS" doesn't do this trick. Explorer may look inside the MP3 for such and if you add the columns will show such.
What updates the MP3 is usually an APPLICATION such a Windows Media Player which has it's own configuration settings to retrieve ID tags.
The WMP MINI FAQ may give you clues as to why it may fail. But I find firewalls that people deny Windows to reach out and get the information is the usual issue.

Okay, I know that windows xp supports ID3 tags, and I've edited them a million times before by right clicking the mp3, going to properties, the summary tab, and advanced. And also, I know that windows usually displays the ID3 information of an mp3 when you hover over it with your mouse cursor (as long as you have those pop-ups enabled). But now, for reasons completely unknown, none of that happens anymore, I only see the type of file and size when I hover over an mp3, and the right click, etc. just gets to a list of "track number" "title" and "comments" all of which are blank even though the mp3 has an ID3 tag. Has anybody else experienced this or can anybody help me regain these functions?
