ID10T Error Probably

Jul 13, 2007 12:48PM PDT

Hi ... I'm using XP Pro and Mozilla.
Every time I try to open a web link from my screen
I get an error message that says "Windows cannot find, http// ... make sure you typed name correctly ...". Option is to click on OK, but right after message appears it will open the page and I can open all the other net links normally, but not internal pages until message is gone.
I've re-installed Firefox. Only thing I haven't done is re-install windows.
Thanks, Zene

http//

The correct start of any web page is http:// (note the colon before the two forward slashes), eg http://www.cnet.com

So, is that your problem?

What do you mean, "a web link from my screen"? Do you mean a shortcut to a web site saved onto your Desktop? If so, how do you get that shortcut to the Desktop in the first place?

Mark .. Thx for reply. The error message does say "http:// ...", sorry.
All shortcut links are dragged from web pages. All worked perfectly until the error message showed up. Rem, they all still work but only after a short delay when the error message appears. More nuisance than anything. Once Foxfire is open everything works normally. So now I just leave it open all the time. Hard to explain, easy to view.

Such is the way with Windows, Sad

Can you take a screen print of the error message and upload it to an image hosting service such as Image Shack? I would like to see it.

Also, from the Properties of the web link you saved on the Desktop, can you post an example of the web site URL?

Many thanks.

Can't Enlarge

I tried to see your pic, but wasn't able to enlarge it and it still be readable.
However Kudos to you in being able to place web link short cuts on your desktop. I have never been able to accomplish a web link shortcut on my desktop and have it work - with both IE 7 and Mozilla.

Try This
Jul 15, 2007 8:13AM PDT

I am copying the exact error message .... Top bar, "http//www.enuinc.com/"
Main body is a red X then, "Windows cannot find 'http://www.eninc.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
Again, the only option is a boxed OK.
I did run virus scan so must be a XP problem.
Link ... All that's required from browser is left click on icon to left of address, hold and drag to desktop. Other option is to left click hold on address from your bookmarks, drag to screen. Reason I use on screen icon links is I hate bookmarks. I'm about the only one that does this.

Tom, thanks. I owe you big time. DDE uncheck worked, but not sure which one. Assume is OK if others are unchecked?

I'm really glad that worked for you Zene, and thanks to Tomron for finding that link. The DDE solution is one I knew nothing about.

That's great work.
