General discussion

ICS software or drivers.

May 6, 2005 3:07AM PDT

I cannot locate the files required to install internet sharing on my 98SE OP.
When I try to install internet connection sharing the wizard cannot locate the files on my 98SE genuine disc.
It also does not state which files it is looking for.
Has anyone any ideas where I can get an install for internet connection sharing or what files are required?
Thanks,

Tell more.

I ran across this when the original OS was 98 (not SE) and it was a botched upgrade. I had to upgrade the OS again.

Also some OEM 98SE CDs don't have ICS. Tell the gritty detail about your 98SE CD.

98SE OS

Well I assumed it was genuine as it came with the hologramed book.
It was supplied with the computer by the now bust Gateway in 2000.
It seems that I have an OEM 98SE without the ICS.
Which leaves me with the problem of trying to get hold of the ICS drivers. I would appreciate any ideas.
Thanks in anticipation

ICS Drivers

ICS Stands for Internet Connection Sharing.
It is supposed to be supplied with 98SE.
However I cannot get Install Wizard to locate the required files on my disc.
I have upgraded Install Wizard but still no luck.
I do not want to network without ICS as I have an ethernet switch.
I can network the computers OK with file and print sharing, but no Internet Connection Sharing.
Basically I need those drivers.

"It is supposed to be supplied with 98SE." is not entirely..

"It is supposed to be supplied with 98SE." doesn't apply to OEM supplied Windows 98se.

It's the vendor's choice to leave off such items to reduce support calls.

It seems to be a Wizard Problem
May 13, 2005 8:26PM PDT

It was on my OEM disc it was just that the Install Wizard could not locate it.
When I have put together all the required files in one folder it will get zipped and uploaded. If Microsoft will not support their own software by putting ICS on their site then I will.
They have cost me 1 week of aggrovation and a serious amount of money in lost time.
I have also found it on other 98SE discs that would not normally install. Now I know where I am looking and what files are required I feel it my Duty to Usurp Microsofts ill intentions. They must know this has been a problem but not put a link on any of their pages to a download to these files. There is also no article I could find to let us know what to do if ICS will not install of the disc.

Not a Microsoft issue.

Your OEM altered the CD contents.

Your feelings are misplaced and you may not be aware of the OEM agreements. Microsoft had NOTHING TO DO with this one.

The files are NOT and NEVER to be found at Microsoft.com since they are copyrighted works. You don't have the rights to them. Scream at the vendor of the system and CD.

ICS IS INSTALLED
May 23, 2005 11:03PM PDT

Once I used the ICS.INF file I got an install.
Didn't last long.
So I copied ICSHARE.INF & ICSHAREP.INF into the same folder.
I anylysed the cab files with PepiMK file anylzer which I got with Spybot and unzipped the likely CABs into another folder and pointed to it when I needed to.
Got ICS working.
Can't be sure that this will work for everyone though, as it seems that Computer suppliers were free to mess with the OS.

This is how I located ICS on 98SE
May 13, 2005 8:09PM PDT

OK Guys & Gals, this is the score with trying to install ICS on your computer with your 98SE disc.
When you go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/(TAB) Windows Setup /(HIGHLIGHT) Internet Tools/Details/(CHECK BOX) Internet Connection Sharing/Have Disc/

This is where your problem can start.
All the required files are set up in CABS.

The first file that the Install Wizard will look for is ICS.INF.

The problem is that it is in a Hidden Folder on your hard drive.
The Wizard will not show it when browsing.

Go To: Settings/Folder Options/(TAB) View/(CHECK BOX) Show all files.

Go To: Hard Drive/Windows/INF and select ICS.INF, copy and paste this to say My Docs.

This file will tell the Install Wizard, which CAB files it, is trying to locate. It will then extract the required files.

Rather than use the CD for the next files, I pointed the browser to C: (where C is your OS Drive)/CABS.

From here the wizard found all the files.

There was no need to use the disc as all the files are already on your computer. It just did not know where to look. REMEMBER THE KEY FILE IS --- ?ICS.INF?

I hope this helps others, as the best suggestion I got was to go out and buy another 98SE disc. If I had I would have had the same problem, as I did try other peoples 98SE discs and none of them worked. Incidentally not all 98SE discs are set up the same. So when you use the ICS.INF file it would be advisable to make sure it is from the same Disc. That is why I suggest using your Hard Drive, as the files would have been installed there on initial install.

Having done all the above your torment is not over.
It knocked out my Network, so when I find a solution to that problem I will let you know.

Here are some articles I found useful:
242450 234863 238135 236445 230112 227172 229829 230070 234815 230140 236465 231648 265728 236152 230150

So with My Host on 98SE, Client 1 on ME & Client 2 on XP I know my problems are just beginning. Would welcome suggestions. I am using a 5 way Ethernet Switch by NEWLINK & my Internet Connection is through a Cable Modem (NTL).

ALL RETAIL 98SE CDs I've encountered...

Are duplicates of the same image for each language.

I've seen hundreds over the years. If you look at OEM versions, such are all over the map and not a Microsoft controlled item.
