ICS Drivers

May 6, 2005 8:17PM PDT

I cannot locate the files required to install internet sharing on my 98SE OP.
When I try to install internet connection sharing the wizard cannot locate the files on my 98SE genuine disc.
It also does not state which files it is looking for.
Has anyone any ideas where I can get an install for internet connection sharing or what files are required?
Thanks,

When I add ICS....
May 6, 2005 10:27PM PDT

to a 98SE machine I look in Control Panel/Add and Remove Programs/Windows Setup/Internet Tools/and put a check mark in ICS. Once I Apply and click OK the installer will do it's thing looking in the System folder for the files it needs. Should it need additional info, I point it to the Win98 folder on the cd, but then I copy this folder to the C drive first and run the 98 install from there, not needing the cd at all.

Installing ICS
May 10, 2005 3:19AM PDT

I tried your advice.
No Luck.
It seems that OEM 98SE discs do not have the neccessary files to use the Internet Connection Sharing facility.
Desperate to find out what these files are.
Then maybe I can get them.
Thanks again

Tell about your Gateway OEM 98SE CD.

It matters and may be why you don't have it.

This is how I located the ICS files

OK Guys & Gals, this is the score with trying to install ICS on your computer with your 98SE disc.
When you go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/(TAB) Windows Setup /(HIGHLIGHT) Internet Tools/Details/(CHECK BOX) Internet Connection Sharing/Have Disc/

This is where your problem can start.
All the required files are set up in CABS.

The first file that the Install Wizard will look for is ICS.INF.

The problem is that it is in a Hidden Folder on your hard drive.
The Wizard will not show it when browsing.

Go To: Settings/Folder Options/(TAB) View/(CHECK BOX) Show all files.

Go To: Hard Drive/Windows/INF and select ICS.INF, copy and paste this to say My Docs.

This file will tell the Install Wizard, which CAB files it, is trying to locate. It will then extract the required files.

Rather than use the CD for the next files, I pointed the browser to C: (where C is your OS Drive)/CABS.

From here the wizard found all the files.

There was no need to use the disc as all the files are already on your computer. It just did not know where to look. REMEMBER THE KEY FILE IS --- ?ICS.INF?

I hope this helps others, as the best suggestion I got was to go out and buy another 98SE disc. If I had I would have had the same problem, as I did try other peoples 98SE discs and none of them worked. Incidentally not all 98SE discs are set up the same. So when you use the ICS.INF file it would be advisable to make sure it is from the same Disc. That is why I suggest using your Hard Drive, as the files would have been installed there on initial install.

Having done all the above your torment is not over.
It knocked out my Network, so when I find a solution to that problem I will let you know.

Here are some articles I found useful:
242450 234863 238135 236445 230112 227172 229829 230070 234815 230140 236465 231648 265728 236152 230150

So with My Host on 98SE, Client 1 on ME & Client 2 on XP I know my problems are just beginning. Would welcome suggestions. I am using a 5 way Ethernet Switch by NEWLINK & my Internet Connection is through a Cable Modem (NTL).

ICS IS INSTALLED AT LAST
May 23, 2005 11:07PM PDT

Once I used the ICS.INF file I got an install.
Didn't last long.
So I copied ICSHARE.INF & ICSHAREP.INF into the same folder.
I anylysed the cab files with PepiMK file anylzer which I got with Spybot and unzipped the likely CABs into another folder and pointed to it when I needed to.
Got ICS working.
Can't be sure that this will work for everyone though, as it seems that Computer suppliers were free to mess with the OS.
