Nov 13, 2009 1:20PM PST

This program just messed up my IE8, I tried every trick I knew including reseting the browser and removing all my personalised settings but still when I click on the new tab I see that instead of the default page i see ICQ optimized page.

Can you please help?

Say that again?

In what way is IE8 messed up? It isn't clear from what you said.

When you click on a new tab, what happens, and what do you want to happen?

I want to see the default page when I click on new tab
Nov 13, 2009 10:36PM PST

I want to see the default page when I click on new tab as it is usally shown.

Instead of the default page, I am seeing an ICQ optimized page.

Try to install the latest ICQ messenger with full installation and uninstall it and see for yourself.

Did u get what I mean?

I mean this software changed my new tab page to its own page

So you change it back?

Tools>Internet Options>General tab>Tabbed browsing settings button. Choose what a new tab should show. Options with me are: (1) The standard new tab page, (2) A blank page, (3) My home page.

I assumed your post wasn't just a rant, but implied a question on how to change it back. So I answered that. Sorry if you didn't mean that.

The guys at ICQ gave a an uninstaller software which removed their customised home page from tabs and reverted it to default.

Thanks!

THE CORRECT FIX
Jun 23, 2010 1:51PM PDT

Hey, I've had this problem before, and just now had it again from new comcast internet software installed on pc. going to the "tabs" section in internet explorer options WILL NOT FIX IT. it is a change in the WINDOWS REGISTRY that causes icq "new tab" page. The poster below said ICQ gave him some software, to fix it, maybe that works, but here's how to fix it WITHOUT installing anymore BS software on your machine (ICQ caused the problem to begin with, so who knows what kind of bad surprises come along with there "fixing" software"

Click Start (windows star button in lower left corner)
Click "Run"
Type: regedit (in the Run Dialog Box)
Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs

Right Click on "Tabs" (in the right column)
Left Click "Modify" on the Right Click Menu.
In the "Edit String" Window replace the contents of "Value data" Dialog Box with:

res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm

Close the Registry Editor and restart Internet Explorer. Enjoy!

IE New Tab (default) Regedit Fix for Windows 7 64 bit
Jul 7, 2010 8:14AM PDT

I had a similar problem but with Comcast displaying their own new tabs page instead of IE's default new tabs page (Windows 7, 64 bit). I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/AboutURLs and found that "tabs" was set to res/ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm. So, I then went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/AboutURLs and made the change there and that fixed the problem.
