Icons won't go away!

Jun 9, 2005 8:35PM PDT

A couple of days ago I made a mistake with a huge folder and selected all of the items in it and and clicked "create shortcut." My entire screen was filled with shortcut icons!

I patiently deleted all of them and again my screen looked normal but now whenever I reboot the computer the icons are there!

I've used the option of setting my computer where it was a day or so ago snd it does that but the icons still come up when it reboots.

Anybody know how to permanently get rid of them?

Which "huge" folder did you do this from?

I'm sure one of the experts here will have better ideas, but until then, check your Desktop folder, (Windows Explorer > C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Desktop and see if there is anything in there that shouldn't be. It might be something like a "desktop.ini" file. If so, copy it to a safe location, then delete the one in the Desktop folder.

(By copying it, if deleting it is a mistake you can reinstate it).

I'm not sure what else I would do in your place, except panic! Happy

Good luck

Icons won't go away

Mark,

The huge folder on my desktop is labeled Misc. and contains all the misc. stuff I store like websites, e-mail, records, etc. Probably contains one or two hundred items.

Like I said, I dumbly selected all and then asked to put a shortcut on the screen which it did for all of them. Please don't ask why I was so dumb to do this because I can't remember my thinking.

I am rather computer dumb and no one else but you has answered my question so the computer gurus must not be interested.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll try it.

If nothing else works,

Hi Don,

If that doesn't work there and no-one else here can help, are two things you can try.

Post the same question in the ''Computer help'' forum, link on the left. Make sure you follow the message TIP and give details of your computer. Someone there may have an idea.

If that fails, download and run a program called HijackThis. This is what Download.com says about HijackThis, (HJT);

''This tiny program examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system, such as browser helper objects and certain types of Registry keys. Pressing the Scan button generates a log of dozens of items, most of which are just customizations. Don't check off an item and hit the Fix checked button unless you're sure it's malware. Clicking Info on selected item tells you why the entry was flagged as suspicious, but not whether it's actually malware. To find that out, search the Web for that item's name or go straight to a forum, such as SpywareInfo or Computer Cops. Saving the log creates a text document you can post to these forums.

The latest version adds powerful tools to the Config window. The process manager and hosts file editor help you excise virulent infections. The unique ADS Spy tool scans for alternate data streams, which some browser hijackers use to hide from spyware removers. The program still installs into whatever directory in which you unzip the file, which can make it hard to locate. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution.''

Now, like the review says, this is a very powerful program and I suggest you do not try and analyse the log it produces yourself. The members in these forums do not have the time to analyse HJT logs and so you need to find a technical forum where they can and are willing to analyse it for you.

To help you, the Moderators in the Virus and Security alerts forum have given a list of sites and more information in this thread;

Good luck.

Michael & Mark,

It worked!

I used the Desktop Cleanup Wizard and it got the job done.

Thanks a bunch for responding.
