Icons, Folders defaulting to end

I have Windows xp professional. I just installed it. It is a brand new computer. When I go on the desktop, the last icon is highlighted. I cannot select any other icon other then the last one.

When I go into Start/Explore where the folders are, it is the same thing. It only selects the last folder and if I go into that folder, the last icon is selected and I cannot select any other icon.

It is not the keyboard. When I try to select another icon with the mouse, it will not let me. When I click on another icon with the mouse, then end one just comes up as this is what is still highlighted. It will only select the last icon.

I suspect that it is a setting somewhere, cannot find anything. Anyone have a clue what is wrong?
