General discussion

icons don't work unless

Jan 6, 2005 11:20PM PST

I have a compaq computer, windows me, and IE6.

Whenever the computer is not in use, and then we go back on it we are unable to open anything on the desktop. We get the hourglass, its lasts a few seconds and then nothing comes up. In order for everything to work we have to restart the computer every time.

It never use to do this before. We ran ad-aware and cleaned everything unable to download spybot search and destroy and spyblaster the set up is always not responding for them. Any help sure will be appreciated.

Thank You in advance

Ritzy, Older Machines....

...Since it appears like your machine is about 2 or 3 years old, they tend to get bloated with software and start degrading due to the effects of "heat" on the machine.

First, take the cover off the computer, blow out the inside to remove dust, the run it without the cover on for a while..Does that help? If so, then you may need to replace the power supply, but at this point, put the computer cover back on and continue reading.

Next, remove unnecessary start up programs and clean up the file system using the instructions in the links below. It may take a while to follow all the steps, but it should get the machine running a little better. Make sure to open the Control Panel, then double click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon and UNINSTALL programs that you no longer use. Stop using screensavers as they cause resource use and can cause "freeze up" issues on some computers.

Now follow the instructions in the links below:

How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive

HOpe this helps.
