Icons and task bar disappered (caused by Kapersky??)

by jmacster4 / May 10, 2008 11:13 AM PDT

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP. I downloaded the Kapsersky Anti-virus software and when it was completed, it had me restart my PC. When I restared, all of my icons and task bar were gone. I've rebooted probably 10 times and they are still gone. All it shows is the background. The background is a picture that I had saved in 'My Pictures', so at least it didn't wipe the harddrive, I'm guessing.

I've even gone into the Windowns Advanced Option Menu (F8) and selected the 'Last Known Good Configurations' setting and rebooted and that didn't work. I hope to God I don't have to reinstall windows.

Thanks for any help someone can provide.

Does the following help.......
The most common reason desktop icons disappear is that they have been shut off. Right-click on your desktop. Click on Arrange icons and from there click on Show desktop icons. It should have a check-mark beside it. This function acts like a toggle switch. Click on it once and it goes away. Click on it again and it comes back.

That didn't work. When I clicked on the Processes tab in the Task Manager, the file 'explorer.exe' is not there. When I go to File, add new task and type in 'explorer.exe', it says it can't be found. I am able to type 'iexplore.exe' and it pulls up Yahoo, which is my default website when I log on. I sent a shortcut to desktop and it didn't appear.

Somehow it doesn't recognize 'explorer.exe' for some reason.

Using Task Manager ...
by Edward ODaniel / May 10, 2008 12:54 PM PDT

see if you can start a command prompt (File > New Task >type in CMD.EXE

If the command prompt opens type CD \ to get to the root then type DIR %WinDir%\explorer.exe

If it is found try starting it from Task Manager by providing the full path to it on the Run line - %WinDir%\explorer.exe

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
