Icons

Every time I close out from the internet all of the desk top icons will lock the computer up when I click on one of them. I have to restart the computer.
I went to help and followed the directions and deleted the shelliconcache but it didn't help.
I started in safe mode and run the scan disk but the computer locked up.
Everything is OK until I get off the internet and click the icon to disconnect.
Any help out there?

The symptom sounds like SPYWARE.

What tools did you try to find such?

None. I don't know how to do that or what to use.
I do have a search and destory that gets the tracking cookies.
Do I need to get a spyware? What is the best one?
Thanks

There is not "one".

The virus and security forum has discussions daily about spyware, but a misconception is that "one" tool will get them all.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&messageID=15002 lists 5 tools that I use to treat the machine first and if the issue still is there I move to Hijackthis and support forums like you see at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=27234&messageID=306550

In closing, use the Optimizing Windows article from http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm since low resources can cause the icons to turn black. But remember that SPYWARE does eat resources so we always remove such.
