icon on taskbar

I have Windows XP on my computer. How can I put an icon on my taskbar? When I try to drag it there the icon jumps back up. Thank you. user470

The taskbar in XP has different parts. From left to right with me:
1. The Start button
2. The Quick launch area
3. The empty part where running programs are shown
4. Two toolbars I chose: the Desktop toolbar and the Windows Search toolbar
5. The socalled System Notification Area (that's not the official name, it seems) with the icons of Zonealarm, indexing, volume, Avast! and the clock.

Now please tell what icon you want to drag to what part of the taskbar.

user470, First right click your Taskbar and unlock it, then drag that shortcut icon down to the Quick Launch area aside of the Start button. After that right click the Taskbar and lock it.

To Tufenuf: After I right-click the taskbar, specifically how do I unlock it? Thank you. user470

there will be a list of options. One of them will be "Lock the taskbar" with a check by it. Click it.

To Coryphaues: Should I get rid of the check by "Lock thr Taskbar" before I click it? Thank you. user470

If you click it it checks. If you click it again it unchecks. It's like a light switch. Turn it on, turn it off.

The only way to get rid of it is to right click to get to it and then click to uncheck it. So you can't get rid of it before clicking. Just try and see.

The best way to find out is to try.

When I right click my Taskbar, one of the options I see is "Lock the Taskbar".

If I have already locked the Taskbar, then what I see is;

If I want to 'unlock' the Taskbar, then I right click the Taskbar and click "Lock the Taskbar" to unlock it. It is a click on - click off type switch.

If your Taskbar is not locked, then you have no need to unlock it.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
