Ibook G3shutdown issues

Jun 6, 2006 6:28AM PDT

Hello,
My Ibook G3, 800mhz, 640ram, 30 gb [22.85 free] has developed a fairly consistent shutdown problem. Whenever I'm going to shut it down for the day I first close all programs, then next choose 'shutdown' from the menu; lately, the screensaver will turn to blue, the 'spinning wheel' will begin, and remain that way until I've got to leave for the day. At that point I press the power button until it fully shuts down. I'm careful about maintenance; Macjanitor several times per week, Disk Permission Repair usually once a month. I've checked several forum archives, but no issues appear similar. No other issues with it; if it lasted for another ten years I'd stay with it; a fine machine. Thanks, Eric

I had this problem once and it did not go away until the next OS update!
I'm not familiar with Macjanitor but it probably allows you to run the CRON jobs that would normally run if you left the machine on overnight.
That said, I didn't catch what version of the OS you are using, or if all your updates have been done. In a previous post you mentioned a Dial Up connection which must be very tedious downloading all the required updates.

By the way, the "screensaver" you refer to is probably the Desktop where all the icons sit. It turns blue right after the Finder shuts itself down. The Screen Saver is the screen you see when the machine has been idle for a while and disappears when the mouse is moved or the keyboard touched.

Yes - Macjanitor is a 'cron' type cleaner, apparently well regarded. I'm running Panther OSX 3.2.9, with the incomparable Firefox browser. On updates; I'm up to date with the exception of the last on, issued just recently. Good time to ask: I chose not to download it thinking that since I'm not using Safari or much else listed in the description - Why bother? Maybe wrong here? And actually, aren't 'updates' generally intended as 'fixes' but not as maintenance? Thanks much - Eric

Updates

Yes, I suppose you could regard updates as fixes but unless you know exactly what is causing your shutdown problem, why take the chance.
Download all the updates and "fixes", Apple issues them for a reason.

Try this:
Leave the machine running for a couple of days without shutting it down, see what happens.

Leave Running

Since casual research doesn't turn up much on this issue in either Google or archives, leaving it running probably is the best cure...I'm probably somewhat overly phobic from old PC days about downloading anything really, but I probably should trust the authorities here and go ahead. Thanks again - Enjoy the summer offerings - Eric
