I've been readign and thinking I need to reinstall my SW.But I have no Hard drive icon on the desk top. Pimpcess, it looks like you mistakenly posted your request in the Forum feedback forum, which is reserved for pointing out bugs and making suggestions about these forums. Thus, in order to give it the attention it deserves, I reposted your request in the Mac forum. You can check for replies by clicking here.

iBook
Aug 10, 2005 11:57AM PDT

From your description of the problem, I don't think there is too much technical to discuss.
Your Hard Drive no longer works. If, as you say, your iBook boots up using the SW CD then the actual iBook is OK.
You say that when it is booted, the Hard drive icon is NOT on the desktop. This is because the iBook does not "see" the Hard Drive.
There are a couple of reasons for this.
1. it is dead. Replacement is the only option
2. Its directories are corrupted and will need to be rebuilt.
The best program for doing this is Disk Warrior. If Disk Warrior cannot fix it, then the HD is probably dead.
Question. When you boot from the SW CD, go to the Disk Utilities/HD Setup and see if you can "see" the Hard drive.
Let us know
Good Luck

I'm so happy you replyed! However I refuse to give up on my mac! There must be someway I can fix it! I went home and started it without the SW cd, to give you a more specific description of what happens. Nothing eeeek! Basically there's little icon with a question mark! Sad waaah
So I'm leaving work right now, and I'm gonna try what you said.I believe I can fix anything! Silly I will let you know if the hardrive is in the disk utilities/HD setup!
kisses!!

Hmmm,

That is not good news.
About the only thing you can do now is try to find a a replacement HD for that machine. Because it is a laptop, you know it is not going to be cheap.
Take a look at these options: MacResQ at 1-866-Mac-Repair. The web site does not mention iBooks specifically but a call to them would soon find out for you.
http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MTOS&Category_Code=SVCIBCLM These people do replace iBook HD's.

Take a look.

Hope this helps a little

clamshell blank screen
Aug 25, 2005 10:34PM PDT

I have a clamshell that had not a blank, but a black screen. It was diagnosed with a bad motherboard. It would cost more than I wanted to spend to fix it so I retired the clamshell to the closet. It was running OS9.2.1.
Once you have all the problems you listed, it's serious, and you may need a new hard drive, as was suggested. That is also expensive. So you have a decision to make. I saved up and bought a new iBook, and am very satisfied with the white G4. But IMO you need to take it to an authorized Apple repair store.
