iBook buggy since 4.8 upload?

Oct 14, 2006 11:08AM PDT

My 1.2 ghz G4 iBook has been a little buggy lately since I went from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8. Specifically web functions?

Video playing on Safari seems to be slow loading and sometimes freezes. I was just looking at the new collection of mac adverts on apple's web site and after watching 2 of them, the browser refused to go to the next.

Also, the instant chat service offered via my colleges webct class learning site drops out quite frequently leaving no choice but to quit Safari and restart the browser.

Is it the new OS upgrade or should I just quit using my iBook as a panini press for those tasty pulled pork cuban sandwiches?

Have you noticed
Oct 15, 2006 1:25AM PDT

that repairing the Disk Permissions does not put up all the stuff that it used to?
Seems there was a change made to DU some time back.

I use ONYX and/or YASU to run the various CRON scripts and do other stuff.
Disk Warrior to keep the index's neat and that's about it.

PreBinding is not relevant under Tiger but is for the lesser numbered OS X's and can make a difference to the launching of applications

actually, yes, I have noticed that...

which is actually good, I guess, but it still seems to be a local, easy, non-third party troubleshooting step to get out of the way... especially right after installing a new OS update or application...

Permissions were good...

however... I had several photoshop projects open along with Dream weaver. My virtual memory was overloaded and the HD was reading 255 megabytes available. Once again it is time to clear my 28.8 gig HD onto my external.

Turkey Rueben for lunch everyone? I hit the bakery this morning and got some good bread!

Thanks all.

Yeah... something wacky is going on...
Oct 16, 2006 11:18AM PDT

When I create a folder to sort school items... I will drag and drop items into the folder. Thee show info item is active for all my folders and it will not say anything is in the folder until I open and close the folder.

In addition... I will move items in and out of an open folder while in icon view and the icons will disappear off the edge of the window. I will change to list view and the items are shown... I will move back to icon view and again the items disappear (without a scroll bar showing on the edge of the window). If I minimize the tool bar across the top and the user menu bar across the left side with the silver minimize button on the top right hand side of the window... and then click it back to full view... the missing folders and files will pop back into view.

In addition... I have pounded font book with a couple hundred new fonts (all checked with the font book utility to avoid bad files). I pulled a collection of fonts off thinking I had doubled up on them... realized I hadn't listed the same under 2 different names... now the font book will load the collection name but no actual fonts that were in the original collection.

1.2 ghz iBook
os 10.4.8
512 ram.

Could the low ram combined with the maxed out HD be causing the problems? I am busy as heck with school and work so I haven't moved stuff to my external HD yet.

Is it time to archive and reinstall? (keep in mind I just installed Tiger a few months ago) or is it time to initialize and reinstall?

Is it time to quit substituting coffee for sleep and is this all a case of me disregarding the instructions to not operate heavy machinery while on this mac like the label says....... Hey! Who stuck that label onto the side of my iBook?

You may be experiencing
Oct 16, 2006 9:48PM PDT

the symptoms of a overtaxed machine (Ram & HD), or not.

I just played with my windows and can reproduce what it is I think you are saying.

The windows do not seem to refresh correctly until they are changed in some way. Closed, View change, etc.

Unless you take some stuff off that drive, you may not have enough room to perform an archive and install and that would be annoying.

All iBooks carry that label on the side and drinking coffee with your eyes closed is a fair substitute.

4.8 sucks
Oct 23, 2006 4:41AM PDT

When I downloaded 4.8 for my macbook I started getting RSD problems, at first I thought it was the software but reinstalling the OS from the boot disc didn't help. Although the problem is in the heat sync and I'm sending my macbook away to get repairs but I still blame 4.8 for triggering the RSD.

I had a similar problem with the 10.4.7 upgrade........
Oct 27, 2006 3:35AM PDT

I always manually download the updates, so that I have them on hand in case I need them. The problem was that the download was corrupted & I had my machine set to skip file verification (not anymore!). To make a long story short, I popped in my Tiger disc, then ran the Archive & Install. Once that was completed, I repaired both the permissions & disc from the Tiger disc. After doing this, I rebooted into 10.4.6, opened the 10.4.7 update (allowing the system to verify the files), installed it, & everything has been fine ever since. Before installing any of the system updates in the future, always repair permissions at the very least (Apple should make the updates do this automatically, as it would save them a lot of grief). I hope this helps you out. P.S. As for the person who says that 10.4.8 sucks, well, there is always going to be one. I have had no problems whatsoever & my system is running an aftermarket processor.

Yea, somethings up with that.

I noticed that my Mac Book also has an issue where it will not boot up or if it does it shuts off right quick. I then hold the power on/off button and it comes up but without notice it just turns off again. I got this in June and wanted to use it for my DJ Gigs but don't think I can trust it.
