IBM Tracking and Loss Control Q

Jul 28, 2004 3:36PM PDT

I had a question about the Tracking and Loss Control service for IBM Thinkpads. It seems cool, as it's able to track a lost notebook and find its location. And if this kind of service enabled me to never lose my laptop, and deter theft, then that in and of itself would convince me to buy a Thinkpad.
So my questions are:
1. How effective is this service?
2. To what extent can it prevent theft?
3. What exactly does it do when activated?
4. If my laptop is stolen, what can it do to help me catch the criminal, retrieve the laptop, or get another one?

I think the real name for it is Computrace. So any info on it?

If someone logs into the internet after stealing the laptop it is very effective. The key is whether this is software or hardware based. If software, a smart thief would reformat the hard drive or even swap out the hard drive before connecting the internet. But if it is hardware based that would work very well.

This is a similar function to Lowjack on cars.

However, make sure you are choosing the notebook that is right for you first and foremost.

IBM's are still known for their excellent durability and keyboards. If you want a 14.1" LCD or smaller they have some of the best choices. If you want a 15.4" or 15" there are better choices elsewhere.
