IBM Thinkpad T42 Problem

I have a Thinkpad T42 which, as of this morning, refuses to do anything once it gets to the main screen -- no icons, no Start button, no system tray. Just the main screen and nothing else. I thought about doing a System Restore but I can only get in using Safe Mode and it won't allow a System Restore from there. Any ideas?

My mom has the t42.

And the symptom sounds like a corrupted OS. When the t42 gets that corrupt (mom let's the nephew use it) we reinstall the OS and drivers to get it up and running again.

Very Sudden....

Well, I just got it in July as a refurb (from a company in Minnesota that leases them out) which was supposed to have been completely cleaned with the OS reinstalled, etc. Of course I'm not sure how reliable those claims are! But it was working fine yesterday, and I haven't had any problems with it until now.
