IBM Thinkpad - missing 128Mb RAM

Mar 16, 2005 9:08PM PST

Hi,

I wonder if any1 has had this problem and therefore could help me

My Thinkpad X20 has 64Mb RAM on the m/board, and in addition, a 64Mb RAM SODIMM making 128Mb. Apparently, these are PC100 SODIMM's.

I bought a 256mb SODIMM, but PC133, as the PC100's were out of stock.

I took out the 64Mb SODIMM, and installed the 256Mb SODIMM. Installed OK, but now, WinXP (and the laptop BIOS) only records 192Mb of RAM.

Are PC133 a total No-no (my guess is that they weren't even around when this laptop was sold, so the instruction manual stipulated PC100) or, if not, then does any1 know why only half of my 256Mb is recognised?

Many Many Thks in advance,

rgds,

Just because it fits doesn't mean it will work. Did you try Crucial.com's offerings?

All other specifications (sides, clock signals, chip selects, page sizes, etc) being met, any PC133 will be fine in PC100 slots unless the BIOS reads the SPD and objects.

Thks Bob...again!

No, not tried crucial.com...will do now as they have stock.

So, this BIOS must be objecting.

Hi,

For info, I sent the SODIMM back. The retailer tested it and found it faulty!
