Sometimes we can disable such items in the BIOS.

These generally came with Intel devices. The most common wired was Intel Pro 1000 mobile. I believe the wireless device was something like the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 or 2200 series. These are available from the Intel support site.
Actualy I had a T40 Hard Drive and put it into a T42 system, I figured I would just need to update some drivers. Unfortunately, I keep getting that Network Controller found, but can't install. I have downloaded every Network Driver on the IBM site, but still doesn't work. I don't know what else to try. I can connect wired but Wireless I can't connect.
Given the long list of drivers from motherboard to network controllers, graphics and more that need updating I'd use the restore CDs for the machine and start over.
I installed PC Doctor diagnostic software from the Lenovo (Thinkpad) driver download page:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-55386
It listed my network controller as "PCI VEN_8086 DEV_4220".
PC Doctor diagnostic software will also detect info for any "Unknown devices".
That one uses "Intel

I am grateful. This is the first time that I have bought a computer and I had to install everything by myself. It was hard with this IBM T42; but I have enjoyed the learning experience with the support of this forum which i wasn't a member before.
most of the answers found on this website were right.
I thank you all for sharing.
