General discussion

IBM T-41 or HP/Compaq Nc6000

Jan 25, 2005 2:00AM PST

Hi, I have read a number of reviews and I really need your help.

I am looking for a thin and light laptop with good quality, long battery time, and reasonable performance.

I have read T-41 has hard disk failures quite often. And not sure of Nc6000's quality.

I think these are business oriented laptops and I've seen very favourable reviews of the NC6000.

I don't have one myself. I have the precursor to that - Compaq N610C. I love that laptop. It's worked flawlessly for me for years. And love that ZSZGA+ screen resolution and trackpad and overall quality

I haven't encountered any hard disk issues. But I regularly backup and also have cloned the hard disc using Aronis software and a cheap USB enclosure to another hard disk. So no worries

Comparisons ........

Yes, the HPnc6000 has very high ratings (8.4 or 8.5 at Cnet - anything over 8.0 is recommended) at Cnet.

This is a 14" LCD and you could get a 15.4" consumer model for less but if this is what you want it is one of the better 14" models. It does NOT have a firewire port like the consumer models so if you want to do digital video editing don't get this notebook.

The IBM's have great keyboards and case construction but they are pricey for what you get. Also, they have been acquired by a Chinese company (and they are looking at whether the purchase would risk espionage from the Chinese takeover of a North Carolina IBM plant -- see newspaper today).

But IBM will continue service and warranty for these notebooks in the US at least for the short term.........IBM is rated #2 to Apple for service at this point..........

Note that the 15.4" HPnx7000 model is the same as the consumer HPZT3000/Compaq X1000 models (X1000forums.com) but the new Sonoma models are getting ready to roll out (HPZT4000, not sure of Compaq or HP busines models).

I urge you to wait and be sure you get a Sonoma Pentium M at this point as they are here but just starting to roll out ........
