What game were they playing?
The article referenced 'footballers' but there are any number of games that are called 'football' in various parts of the world.
Australian Rules Football? Rugby? Soccer? (Probably not soccer judging from the shape of what I think was the ball, but certainly soccer is called football in many places).
i managed to catch about 20 minutes of the game, it was "tense"

Bill, this World Cup is for the game Rugby Union Football, which originated at Rugby College in England. Australian Rules and Rugby League are different codes.
